Angus Chung

Project Manager – Education

 University of Cambridge

Angus is a Psychology and Education graduate from the University of Cambridge, currently a ministry trainee at Euston Church, London. Born and bred in Hong Kong, he knows deeply how an exam-oriented education system kills the purpose and joy of learning (as well as life). During his stay in the UK, he realised the important role of reflection in the effectiveness and fulfilment of learning. This enlightened him to advocate reflective practices through the projects delivered at HKJSSP.

Joy Wong is a year 3 Psychology student at UCL. Her journey into psychology begins with a question - is there a relationship between perceived intelligence and mindset thinking? Ever since then, she has had great interest in individual differences, especially how it influences explanations into mental health. This deepens her passion in psychopathology. Besides, she becomes more aware of the stigma attached to mental illness in HK through her study experience in the UK, which then motivates her to make changes to people's attitudes. As a project manager, she hopes to break the boundaries and get people to really start taking care of their mental health, just as their physical health.

I am a counselling and psychology graduate from HKSYU, currently a school counselor at a secondary school . The disparity in attitude and stigma surrounding mental health problems has raised my awareness to help people struggling with mental health issues. My previous work experience, in special school and primary school, has gained my passion to advocate for SEN students and facilitate student’s development in reaching their full potential. I look forward to connecting society and promoting the importance of education on different psychological issues and topics. Stay in the loop!!

Project Manager – Webinar & Talks

 King's College London

I am a second year psychology student at King’s College London. Although certainly grateful for the rising awareness of mental health around the world, there are still lots to be addressed. Unspoken stresses and taboo topics in HK continue to foster misconceptions and stigmatisation which further widen the gap between false believes and psychological knowledge. For example, the LGBTQ community is often stereotyped and misunderstood by the public due to limited education and information.

There are many such gaps waiting to be filled and I am eager to participate and lead projects that fulfill these exigent demands.

Stella is a year three student, majoring in Psychology in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Psychology is an interesting subject for her because it is related to daily life! She hopes she can promote the importance of mental health and some interesting psychology theories to the public. And she is especially interested in educational psychology and hopes to meet more people who like psychology and learning as well!!!

Leroy is a Psychology and Language Sciences graduate from UCL. His initial interest in psychology came through his own experiences within the mental health support system during his school years. He later developed a strong passion for sports psychology and developmental psychology, the latter being the main motivator behind his degree choice. He is an ardent supporter of a psychology-informed educational system and is further keen on ensuring that this is done as inclusively as possible so that those on the fringes of conventional education, who hence will require extra educational support, can also reap the benefits of such a system. He is most looking forward to continuing the school based mental health program!

Destiny is a secondary five student who is a keen participant on exploring and acquiring new skills on all fronts. Born and raised in Hong Kong for 16 years, she notices that behind rows and rows of lit skyscrapers, there are countless underrepresented groups who lack access to resources, especially children. Remained stuck in an unending loop of intergenerational poverty, a better life might remain beyond their reach despite their best efforts. Thereby, commitment to education for every child is of particular interest to her, urging her to devote herself into services such as free tuition for the underprivileged children, striving her best to align with them.

Sophie is a Year 2 Psychology student at the City University of Hong Kong. Her passion for psychology and mental health sprouted long since she was little, for why people commit suicide and why others would stigmatize this behaviour had always been an unanswered question in her mind. Particularly interested in clinical and educational psychology, she aspires to improve the psychological wellness of children and adolescents in Hong Kong, as well as to accompany people experiencing mental illness and teenagers on their way overcoming their struggles. Realising misconceptions about mental health issues of many Hong Kong people, she aims to promote public awareness of psychological well-being and facilitate discussion related to groups who suffered from prejudice, such as people with mental illness and SEN students, through youth-led interactive projects.

Jami is a year two student at The University of Hong Kong, majoring in Psychology and Counseling. Her interest in psychology began during her internship in 2018 at a children-based psychological clinic in Hong Kong. Ever since, she has been determined to become a clinical psychologist and has developed a strong passion for mental health. Learning to check in with herself emotionally allowed her to recognise the importance of accepting positive and negative emotions, which is the key to having a good relationship with yourself. For this reason, she wants to be able to help others achieve this goal and understand themselves better. By joining HKJSSP, she believes the society would be a great platform for her to help raise awareness, remove the social stigma around mental illnesses, and educate the next generation.

Tiffany is a recent graduate at The University of Hong Kong. Even though her major seemed to have no relationship with psychology, her research interests are on eating disorders and weight management in children, teenagers and young adults. Tiffany is dedicated to help patients struggling with eating disorders and negative body image to be well-nourished and regain confidence through interventions with nutrition and psychology. She believed that stigmatization and fat-shaming culture fuels and reinforces irrational behaviors; and non-judgemental, unconditional support could facilitate recovery. She therefore wishes to send correct, well-researched messages to anyone who are struggling to accept who they truly are while serving HKJSSP. With previous experience in social media production, she hopes to join hands with the research team to produce heartwarming and informative posts in supporting those who are going through a rough patch.

Brianne is a third year Psychology student at the University of Bath. Her interest in psychology stemmed from coming across a news article about the long waiting times people have to wait before receiving psychological treatment in public hospitals in Hong Kong. With this in mind, she believes that everyone should have the equal opportunity to receive psychological treatment regardless of their background, which increases her passion to assist disadvantaged people within the society in the future. Throughout the years, her experiences with different volunteer and internship work also make her realise the importance of improving the community awareness surrounding mental health issues. By becoming one of the marketing officers in HKJSSP, she hopes to promote psychological knowledge to a broader audience and clear the misconceptions people have surrounding mental health.
